This morning I came across an online dating profile that began “I am an attractive…”
Ick. No.
This brings to mind a principle that looms large in online dating:
If you claim a positive characteristic, either you have made it less true (e.g., by declaring you’re attractive, you become less attractive) or you are just plain wrong. Really–haven’t you noticed that someone who says “I am funny” is never funny?
That is sort of the trick of dating profiles, to make yourself seem completely awesome without outright calling yourself awesome. It definitely takes some level of creativity, and some people are very, very bad at it.
Or they might just be newbs. I’m pretty sure I called myself “attractive” in a profile at some point in my early online dating days, although I certainly wouldn’t lead off with that adjective.
